This weekend (namely Saturday, February 13), The Secret Lab crew (i.e. Jon and I) will be in an hour north in San Francisco to wander aimlessly around the Macworld 2010 Expo floor.

From March 9 – 13, we’ll again be in San Francisco to attend the 2010 Game Developers Conference (GDC). We’ll undoubtedly have some Secret Lab schwag to share at this point, so try and sync up with us if you can! We’ll hopefully have some big news about our upcoming projects then too.

From April 10 – 15 we’re hoping to be in Atlanta, Georgia attending CHI 2010; but this is yet to be confirmed (due to the million other things we’re doing!)

From the beginning of May, we’ll be back in Australia. We’re going to be running a few workshops, likely on Unity and iPhone/iPad development then (probably in Melbourne and Brisbane) – stay tuned for information on those!

In June (probably, depending on the whim of the mighty Apple) we’ll be back in San Francisco to WWDC 2010 and all the exciting iPad learning it brings.

Again, it’s been quite some time since my last post! A few interesting things have been happening:

  • A paper I wrote got accepted into OZCHI! This pleases me greatly! So I’ll be heading there in November.
  • Pending our upcoming E-3 Visa issuance, the Secret Lab team will be heading to Mountain View, California to work for a month in two weeks. That should be great fun!
  • The AUC /dev/world/2009 conference went very well! #fingUTAS (also known as the University of Tasmania) gave a great bunch of presentations, and hosted a fun Quiz Night and Lightning Talks. All the presentations were great! My two presentations went very well, and will be available for download in the near future!
  • The most recent TUCS Tech Talks, starring pjf were a huge success! Paul is an amazing speaker, and we got an amazing crowd!

It’s certainly interesting being in a room with five to seven lawyers and having to hold my own in their discussions. Perhaps I should do a Laws degree next? At the very least, I’ll loop Lawyers, Guns and Money (not the original) for a while (great song!) Many of the fairly decent results that have come out of my meetings with lawyers have come from me simply quoting Alan Shore or Denny Crane. At least I’m not hiding in Honduras yet…

On a more entertaining note, the new PopCap game, Plants vs. Zombies is one of the greatest “casual games” I’ve ever had the fortune to play. I so thoroughly enjoyed it during the 60 minutes of trial gameplay that I immediately paid for it (a bargain at $30 AUD). I’ve been playing for at least 6 hours so far and it shows no signs of slowing down! Not to mention it has an awesome sandbox mode and a series of great mini-games.

More congratulations are due to another friend, Jess “EvilJess” Lethbridge, who has scored an ADC Student Scholarship to WWDC 2009. She joins the UTAS delegation being sent by the AUC: me, Andrew Bennett, Jon Manning, Josh Deprez, Jess Clarke and our evil lab-master, Tony Gray.

Our departure for WWDC is a little under 4 weeks away! A good time is sure to be had by all! In other news, the press release for Secret Lab’s game, Day of the Tiki has gone out! Look upon it and marvel!

My talk at ACS Tasmania’s IT in the Club went really well, and is available in the downloads section of this site. The event got a record turnout (although, admittedly, mostly friends of mine) and everyone seemed to enjoy hearing about my research – even if I did feel seriously ill and almost pass out mid-speech! Also, on the 6th of this month, myself and Josh Deprez, Winton, Andrew Bennett and Mr. Ford got stuck in an elevator for an hour, it was an amusing experience. We passed the time by singing along to Moskau and 99 Luftballoons and then passed an ethernet cable through the tiny gap in the door and used iChat to talk to Peter Lyle and Jon Manning. A good time was had by all!

“Project F”, also known as Secret Project, has been progressing extremely well. Many late nights have been spent working with the team: Andrew Bennett (Art), Jon Manning (Programming), Josh Deprez (Music), Zen Miles (Gameplay), Peter Lyle (Gameplay, Project Management) and myself (Producer). We’re in the middle stages of development right now and most of our time (with the exception of Andrew, who is busy 3D modelling, and Jon, who is busy coding the engine) has been spent designing levels (yes, Secret Project is a game!) Zen Miles, Andrew Bennett and Jon Manning hard at work!

We think we’ll start talking about it sometime within the next month, release is still scheduled for early June (around when everyone suspects WWDC will be!) Speaking of WWDC, I’m greatly looking forward to the now annual pilgrimage to San Francisco. Lots of exciting things are happening with Secret Lab at the moment and I can’t wait to tell the rest of the world about them. Hopefully I’ll see lots of you there!

My PhD is progressing well, not that much has happened – I’ve spent academic year thus far writing a few journal and conference papers, only one of which has been submitted yet – more on this as we receive it! I’m going to spend my time drinking coffee and working on cool things with Secret Lab. Until next time, everyone should go and watch robot friend, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Battlestar Galactica and Chuck. It was a tremendous success, some great sessions were run. Jon Manning, Andrew Bennett and myself attended as presented and had some great feedback from our sessions on AppleScript, OpenGL and Polishing Applications, respectively. I met some great people and learnt a few new things.That\'s Number Wang!

Also, the trivia night was absolutely awesome; kudos to the University of Tasmania/AUC’s Tony Gray for running that (with a little help from the Secret Lab team.)
